Why Grass fed?

Cattle are ruminants. Ruminants are designed to live exclusively on a forage diet. Cattle finished on high quality pasture produce a very healthy beef for human consumption.Cow

In a three year study conducted by researchers with Clemson University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and the USDA, comparison was made between beef from steers finished on a corn-silage concentrate and beef from steers finished on grass.

The beef from grass fed steers was determined to be:

  • lower in total fat;
  • higher in beta-carotene;
  • higher in vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol);
  • higher in the B-vitamins thiamin and riboflavin;
  • higher in calcium, magnesium, and potassium;
  • higher in total omega-3s;
  • higher in CLA (cis-9 trans-11), a potential cancer fighter;
  • higher in vaccenic acid (which can be transformed into CLA);
  • lower in saturated fats;
  • plus contain a healthier ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids (the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio was 4.84 for grain finished versus 1.65 for grass finished).

That makes ten reasons why you want to be sure that your beef comes from grass fed, grass finished cattle. The way to confirm that is to know your farmer, and even better, to visit the farm. Please let us know when you'd like to come by!
